For Brian Buck, former pro baseball player turned high-performance coach, the answer lies in mastering resilience and leveraging cutting-edge tools like Blood Flow Restriction (BFR). His first hand experience as a player gave him unique credibility with athletes. “They know I’ve been in their shoes,” he explained, “and that helps me connect and build trust.” 

The foundation of player availability 

One of the most significant takeaways from Brian’s career is the critical importance of player availability. “Availability is everything,” he emphasised. “It doesn’t matter how high you jump or how fast you throw if you can’t get off the bench.” 

For Brian, building robust athletes who can withstand a gruelling baseball season's physical and mental demands is just as important as enhancing their performance. “It’s about finding the right balance between resilience and performance,” he said. This approach involves tailoring training programmes to address athletes' weaknesses while amplifying their strengths.

Brian’s approach involves using high-low programming to manage neural and physical fatigue. “On low days, we focus on aerobic capacity and movement quality. On high days, we push hard to elicit adaptations,” he explained. 

For pitchers, who often operate on strict schedules, BFR can be a game-changer. It allows them to maintain arm care routines without overloading the system. “BFR fits seamlessly into their routines,” Brian said. “Whether it’s pre-activation before a game or passive recovery afterward, it enhances what they’re already doing.” 

Educating athletes and coaches 

A key to successfully implementing BFR is education. “Athletes need to understand the why behind it,” Brian emphasised. “When they feel the results, like reduced soreness or increased output, the buy-in is almost automatic.” 

This applies to coaches as well. Brian advised starting small and integrating BFR into existing practices rather than overhauling routines. “It’s about finding the right moments to introduce it,” he said. “Once the athlete notices the difference, it becomes a natural part of their routine.”

When asked what separates a good coach from a great one, Buck’s answer was rooted in empathy and understanding. “A great coach is someone who can relate to their athletes and get the best out of them,” he said. Drawing from his own experiences, he strives to be the coach he wished he had during his playing days. “It’s about building trust and creating an environment where athletes can thrive.”
