Those who use a special form of BFR, known as Passive BFR, can expect an accelerated recovery, meaning athletes can feel fresh after even the toughest of sessions.

When you strap in to Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training you know that you can expect the pump of your life. But did you also know that BFR’s benefits extend far beyond muscle hypertrophy? Like all great tools, our BFR-integrated TechWear has a variety of functions that can be accessed depending on the user’s aim. Want to go hard and up performance? Great. We’ve got just the BFR training plans for you. But did you know you can use BFR to speed up recovery? This is where BFR can work its magic in a different way.

Those who use a special form of BFR, known as Passive BFR, can expect an accelerated recovery, meaning athletes can feel fresh after even the toughest of sessions.

What is Passive BFR Training?

Passive BFR training can be done anytime, anywhere. By simply strapping in with your Hytro BFR TechWear, you put into motion a whole series of physiological changes in your body. There’s not even any need for movement. You can literally just sit on the sofa and watch TV while your body gets to work. Staying strapped in for just a few minutes is enough time for the body to produce more recovery hormones, remove waste products, reduce inflammation and increase the uptake of nutrient-rich blood.

How does Passive BFR Training Work?

Strapping in to BFR causes a partial occlusion of the muscle, meaning that the amount of blood flowing back to the heart is limited. This is also the case in Active BFR, though the response is stronger in Passive BFR because you strap in tighter. The muscle swells as it begins to fill with blood. This then places the muscle under metabolic stress. That may usually sound like a bad thing, but when it comes to BFR, stress is good. Because of this stress, the body releases a surge of recovery hormones which, you’ve guessed it, helps to recover the body.

When the straps are then removed, the blood that pooled in the swollen muscles is suddenly released. It rushes back to the rest of the body, and as it does so it removes waste materials from the joints it passes. This returning blood, known as reperfusion, circulates the body delivering recovery hormones and nutrient rich blood to the muscles and structural tissues.

Though you may only have strapped your upper or lower body, Passive BFR works systemically by promoting rapid recovery in the whole body.

How should you use BFR for Recovery?

For maximum impact, we recommend performing Passive BFR immediately after exercise. If that’s not possible, then strapping in within 24-hours of exercise still ensures a good response. With the straps pulled to a tightness of 70-90% (100% being as tight as possible), you can sit back and enjoy the simple process:

  • Once you find your Velcro fixing point, apply firm pressure to the Hytro rubber tab and rub to fully connect with the fixing point.
  • Relax for 3-5 minutes to give your muscles time to fill with blood
  • Remove the straps and embrace the feeling

Those who are experienced in Passive BFR can then wait a few minutes and strap in again, treating themselves to a second round of Passive BFR to truly lock in recovery gains.

When should you use BFR for Recovery?

Every athlete is different. You may want to use Passive BFR after a tough match, an intense race or a challenging training session. It may even be a rest day. No matter the time, if you feel that your body needs to accelerate its recovery, reach for your Hytro BFR TechWear and let it work its magic. But don’t just trust us.
